A Gymnast Series
On the Beam
My current series of paintings examines the spectator-performer relationship in women's sports, especially Women's Artistic Gymnastics during the Summer Olympic Games. The references are captured from online videos of the original broadcasts of these events.
There is a kind of strange tranquility in the face of a person performing for the world. The appearance of vulnerability in someone who has obtained such a level of physical prowess is as intriguing as the event itself. I'm interested in the way hesitation, nervousness and excitement can be felt both by audience and athlete at once.
These paintings are about the movements of the body as we see it perform.
